On Tuesday, July 30th, I had the honor of attending Beartooth‘s sold-out Summer tour with Currents, Boundaries, and Nevertel at The Senate in Columbia, SC. The show was especially memorable as the temperature inside the venue reached a sweltering 90 degrees, making it the hottest show of the tour so far, according to Beartooth‘s frontman, Caleb Shomo.
The night kicked off with Nevertel, who delivered an electrifying performance that left the audience feeling energetic. From the very beginning, the musicians’ explosive energy had the audience’s attention from start to finish.
Next up was metalcore band Boundaries! Frontman Matt McDougal came out and unleashed some of the thunderous vocals I’ve heard in a while. All heads were banging from the front to the back of the venue. Each and every member of the and had such a strong stage presence that it could be felt from outside. Drummer Tim Sullivan, bassist Nathan Calcogno, and dueling guitarists Cody DelVecchio and Cody Emond carried the aggressive riffs that accompanied Matt’s vocals.
Currents took the stage with such furry that it took me a second to grasp my thoughts. This was my first time seeing Currents and they sure did not disappoint. With their absolute raw, technical, and purposeful blending of riffs and vocals, the entire room was awe-struck. With every song delivered the energy in the room continued to climb! By the end of the set, there was a tangible and electrifying energy that filled the room. As the stage cleared the room filled with a buzz of anticipation for the one and only BEARTOOTH.
As the last instrument checks happened and the lights dimmed the night had finally reached its peak. One by one the members of the mighty Beartooth thundered on stage. The crowd roared with excitement. Starting out strong with “The Surface”, Beartooth had the crowd swept up in raw electricity. Caleb Shomo (lead vocalist) leaves everything out on the stage as he delivers one of the best performances out there. As the crowd surged and flowed from the blends of aggressive riffs found in “Body Bag” to the heart-felt belts found in “Look The Other Way.” With so much going on in the world it felt like a musical therapy session and Caleb, Oshie, Connor, Zach, and Will are the orchestrators. Yet again, Beartooth has solidified why they are one of the best bands in metal right now. As the confetti had finally fallen and the flashy lights dimmed Caleb dropped his mic and proceeded to have an acapella moment with the crowd. He then left the stage and fans dispersed into the looming storm brewing outside.
