Irish Blues Sensation, Gráinne Duffy, LIVE at The Stanhope House – NJ

On a rainy Sunday night in New Jersey, there was only one place to be: The Stanhope House. This legendary venue has played host to some of the biggest names in music history such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters and Albert King. If these walls could speak, the stories told would be tremendous. Adding to the rich history of the room, this night was something quite special also. The North Jersey Blues Society packed the room for their renowned Showcase Series with blues devotees eager to see Gráinne Duffy.

It’s not every day that an international blues sensation comes to town, but Gráinne and her band made the trip all the way from Ireland to pour their hearts out for us. As a singer, songwriter and guitarist, there is nothing she can’t do! Mixing classic Delta Blues with roots rock and soul, her repertoire is incredibly impressive. Gráinne’s husband and bandmate, Paul Sherry, was a force to be reckoned with on guitar and backing vocals all night. His playing is other worldly and their chemistry on stage is undeniable. Marty Binder on the drums (Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, etc.) and Harlan Lee Terson on the bass (Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, etc.) were an absolute treat to see live as well with their immense musical talents.

The night consisted of so many incredible original tunes off of Gráinne’s latest release ‘Dirt Woman Blues’ in addition to her album ‘Voodoo Blues’ and several other blues classics. The best way I can describe this performance is “Food for the soul”. The audience was hanging on to every word and note throughout the evening wishing it would last forever. However, all good things must come to an end and everyone in the room was on their feet giving a well deserved standing ovation. I certainly hope to see Gráinne Duffy and her band again soon and I urge you to do the same next time they’re around!
