Some of the biggest names in the music industry are women! Over the years women have been moving up and making their mark in the music industry.  They’ve grown independent and honored all over the world. Although women in music are still put down and taken for granted by some people they always prove them wrong and continue to evolve.

The Runaways: Pitchfork

In 1975 The Runaways became one of the first all female rock bands. Joan Jett was the front-woman of the band and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015! In 1984 Madonna came out with her hit song “Like A Virgin” at the first ever MTV VMAs. Although Amy Winehouse passed away in 2011, she is still a huge impact on women in music today. Headliner magazine called her “one of the greatest talents the United Kingdom has ever produced.”

Shania Twain: The Guardian Magazine

In 1967 Aretha Franklin joined the scene, and became the first woman inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In 2000 Shania Twain became the first album to top Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart for 50 weeks with “Come On Over”. At the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2010 Beyonce took home 6 Awards and became the female artist that took home the most awards won in a single night. Avril Lavigne is an entirely self-taught musician and she can play the guitar, piano, and the drums. She also has her own clothing line called “Abbey Dawn.

Katy Perry: NY Times Magazine

Katy Perry holds the record for the most consecutive number 1 dance songs with 18! In 2011 her album “Teenage Dream” tied with Michael Jacksons “Bad” for the artists with the only albums to generate 5 hot 100 number one hits. In 2014 Taylor Swift became the first woman to replace herself at No.1 on the Hot 100 when “Shake It Off” was dethroned by “Blank Space”, both off of Swifts album “1989″. Swift was also named Woman of The Decade in 2019 by Billboard. She was the first woman to receive this award.

Billie Eilish is the youngest artist to win all four major Grammy categories. Those consist of Best New Artist, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Record Of The Year. In 2021 Olivia Rodrigo became one of the most well known artists in the world. Her name is everywhere, and her songs are played all the time! Her first ever tour sold out in barely 3 minutes! Billboard even has an event every March for Women’s History Month where they honor the biggest female musicians! “Billboard’s Women in Music event recognizes music’s rising female artists, creators, producers and executives for their contributions to the industry and community.”
