I Prevail-“Bad Things” Single Review

If I Prevail’s first two tracks from ‘True Power’ is any indication of what’s to come: Be Ready for heavy hitting truths and even heavier riffs!!

The first track I Prevail dropped on us, “Body Bag”, smacks us in the face from the first notes! Driving beats from the drum and bass as well as the guitar. Rapid fire delivery from Eric and Brian! Gabe Helguera gives us tons of brass with heartbeat rhythms then smashes the short-lived calm with insane kick drum beats. Steve Menoian gives us quick picked riffs and then heavy distorted breakdowns along with Dylan Bowman. They both play chase on the strings for one of the short solos. The entire band is showing such growth in their musicianship, and we are happy to see it!! This track feels like a bit of a tough love message of stop whining about the little inconveniences and doing nothing to fix anything. Just live it up because “we’re all leaving in a body bag”.

I Prevail‘s latest single “Bad Things” begins with synthetic higher voiced vocal ululations. Then Brian Burkheiser comes in with his well known smooth and clean vocals. A few lines in: Eric Vanlerberghe joins Brian with some of his more melodic range.  The two sing about how their brains are dysfunctional machines processing an influx of emotions and despite being aware of that dysfunction, trying to power through and not be “falling into dark thoughts”. If you-the reader-are familiar with our tendencies toward burning bridges before you can be burned and staying with the bad because at least you know you won’t be disappointed as a protective mechanism: then you’ve got the gist of this track. We here at Keynote love when artists are open about mental health challenges and I Prevail-with this track-seems to foreshadow an upcoming album of emotional introspection and intelligence.

Their newest full album True Power is sure to be their best record so far!  Tha album is set to release 8/19/22, preorder here.
