Cohen is bringing more noise with their latest single and new music video for “No Rainbow.” This comes just ahead of their upcoming remastered debut album, HAPPY.wav, set to release on March 25, 2022.

Cohen may be one of the most eye-catching new bands I’ve discovered while traveling to cover shows and work with bands. Their neon-colored branding is both nostalgic and modern, and their music will attract fans of nu-metalcore, deathcore, and even post-hardcore, such as Yüth Forever, Left to Suffer, and Reflections. The band’s style also reminds me a lot of My Chemical Romance’s Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge era.

“No Rainbow,” like much of Cohen’s music, focuses heavily on mental health struggles. The band’s lyricism reflects the feelings of a lot of young people today – like coping with depression, anxiety, and having to hide that to fit in with society.

“I keep telling myself I’m not depressed
Just under the weather
Don’t expose vulnerability
Just pull it together”

Nickolas Erickson’s rapid vocals hit hard in the blistering, breakdown-filled verses, and that heaviness is balanced well with a catchy chorus that shows off his incredible range and the intense emotion he injects into the music. The guitars in this song also caught my attention – both the tone and riffs sound chaotic, panic-driven, and hit just as hard as the drums.

They say ‘get over it,
The skies will clear,’
But the days have seemed overcast
For what seems like years

The video was directed by Juan Ibanez and compliments the song well with its dark (but still vivid) color grading and well-framed performance shots. The video includes unsettling imagery of Erickson undergoing a strange surgery and even killing a grotesque character with a smiley face box on its head before he wakes up, screaming in agony.

Considering Cohen’s art, their music, relatable lyrics, and talent – it’s only a matter of time before they become a big name in modern nu-metalcore.
