Jordy Searcy – “Shoulda Been In A Band”

Didn’t we all say we were going to form a band (or seven) in high school? Sure they don’t all work out, but at the time no one could convince that we wouldn’t make it. Jordy Searcy, a former Voice competitor, singer-songwriter, and recently van life enthusiast, takes us right back to those times with his newest single. “There’s a Mellow Mushroom in my hometown” he starts, telling the story of one of his earliest and fondest gigs. The tale takes a turn though, as you realize in the chorus this relationship didn’t last. “Why did I have to be so mean when you were 18?”

Cause you and me were the man, man

and I think the world shoulda heard those songs

It’s been so long and we’ve always been doing the best that we can, man

-Chorus

Musically this song has the raw energy that Jordy carries in his vocal. It starts out simple with the lyric and guitar but soon ramps up with the tight drum groove. It doesn’t need any flashy synths or extra overdubs, just the live rhythm section and the simple vocals. You can’t help but move along, even in the more subdued prechorus. For those used to some of his softer material it’s definitely a contrast, but not a bad one in any sense. In the chorus the power he’s able to deliver especially on the repeated “We shoulda been in a band” is staggering. The band also builds accordingly but then just as quickly can suck the air out for a thinner pocket verse.

The story Jordy tells is deeply personal and after listening, you surely wish you could have been in that Mellow Mushroom hearing the music they made. It’s also a reminder that we may have events, relationships, seasons in our life that we wish went differently, but it’s important to cherish those times just as much and remember the good that came as well.

“Shoulda Been In A Band” was produced by Lucas Morton. Featuring Solomon Dorsey, Tyler Chester, and Mark Stepro in the band. Featuring Jordy Searcy and Leah Leach on vocals. Mixed by Sean Moffitt
