Ella Galvin’s Electric Show at Bowery Electric

Deep in the grungy section of the East Village, up and coming singer/songwriter, Ella Galvin debuted her first New York City show inside the Map Room of The Bowery Electric. Originally hailing from Boston, and raised in Wellesley and London, Ella made New York City her home and attended college at Fordham University.

Ella describes her sound as a mix of soul, pop, and jazz, which was evident in the songs she and her band covered such as the 2010 hit, American Boy by Estelle. During this performance, Ella was accompanied by her five bandmates: a saxophonist, bass guitarist, electric guitarist, drummer, and what I can only assume was an electronic xylophone. Maybe it’s because jazz and soul aren’t my typical genres, but I was intrigued by the electronic mallet instrument as I had never seen something like that before in a live setting.

Growing up hanging out in the East Village area, The Bowery Electric is exactly the type of venue I envisioned promising young artists such as Ella Galvin to perform at. It’s a rock and roll hangout spot with its intimate live performance room, ‘The Map Room’ sectioned off from the bar. The room gets packed easily, and this show was standing room only because of how many people attended. With over 6,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, Ella is a verified artist with a bonafide fan base.

One of my favorite things about going to live concerts is witnessing the comradery between bandmates while on stage. In addition to Ella, all five band members each poured their souls into this performance and the audience was living in the energy! Ella performed her own song about moving to New York City, and there were also standout solos performed by the saxophonist and xylophonist. They all belted out and went ham during their respective moments to shine.

At the end of the set, the crowd was happily cheering on Ella and her bandmates, even chanting ‘encore’ repeatedly in hopes that there would be one last song. Alas, the show was a wrap as there was another performer afterward ready to take the stage.

While she has mainly worked with bands up until this point, Ella is planning on releasing her very own single in the next upcoming months. Be sure to be on the lookout for it!
