Earlier this month, Reba Meyers, vocalist and guitarist of Pittsburgh’s metalcore band Code Orange, dropped her debut single as a solo act, “Certain Uncertainty.”
Released independently on December 12th, the single includes both the original and acoustic versions of the song. In her Instagram post announcing the song, Meyers also teased at a full length album in Spring of 2025.
Along with her work with Code Orange since the band’s formation in 2008, Meyers was also founding member of the band Adventures, a spinoff band with fellow members of Code Orange that ran from 2012-2016. She is also the first female signature artist with ESP guitars.
Lyrically, the song takes Reba back to her youth, and reflects both on how far she as come as a musician and how much further she plans to go with the solo project.
The main hook of the song, “Just wanted to make you bright, Just wanted to see you shine, Just wanted to make you bright, Oh, to be perfect for you, Oh, to be perfect for you,” shows Meyers’ desire to live up to the dreams she had as a little girl and to think that now that girl would be proud of where she has gone.
“I’m finding that I have the space only now in my life to have a bird’s eye view on my adolescence, and that perspective, and current time of growth made it the perfect moment to begin to release solo material,” Meyers said.
Sonically, the song is a bit of a departure from the hardcore/metalcore style that Meyers is known for with Code Orange. Instead, it leans more towards a 1990’s grunge sound, with heavily distorted guitars yet a more simplistic chord progression. The song has almost a Soundgarden feel to it, with the guitar being a heavy focus in the mix. Meyers went with a similar approach in her vocal style, straying from her normal harsher and more aggressive singing in Code Orange and more towards a more raw, natural sound, again harkening back to a bit of a Chris Cornell influence.
The music video, shot and directed by Greg Puciato of Better Lovers and The Black Queen and formerly of The Dillinger Escape Plan, is fairly straightforward, combining home footage of Meyers as a little girl with her in the present walking through a brightly lit city. Puciato has worked with Meyers in the past on her 2022 song “Lowered,” which while released under her name, was not officially the start of her solo project.
Reception to both the video and song(s) has been overwhelmingly positive, with fans in the comment sections of her Instagram and YouTube raving about her new 90’s sound and the prospect of a fleshed out solo project.
Along with the song dropping Meyers partnered with the Braddock Youth Project in Pennsylvania, an organization that aids youth in creating sustainable community development projects. A portion of sales of shirts in Meyers’ merch store will go to the organization.
