This past weekend, the iconic Forest Hills Stadium in Queens was transformed into a showcase of Asian artistry and representation. Fittingly held during Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the Head In The Clouds New York Music & Arts Festival took over the venue for an unforgettable two-day extravaganza on May 11th and 12th.
Despite chilly temperatures that weekend, festival attendees braved the cold to support their favorite artists. As a half Asian-American myself, witnessing such an array of incredibly talented Asian acts take the stage at one of New York City’s major music venues was an empowering experience.
A Talented Display Of Asian Representation
The festival featured a stellar lineup spanning genres like K-pop, Indie Rock, R&B, EDM, and more. Some memorable moments from day 1 included Vietnamese-American singer/songwriter Thuy (pronounced “Twee”) performing her new song “Cloud 11” which she debuted at Coachella. South Korean Indie Rock band Wave To Earth performed their first show in the US at this festival. Fan favorite Illenium DJ’d simultaneously while Dabin rocked out on the guitar. On day 2, both the bass guitarists for Lyn Lapid and Eyedress jammed their hearts out on stage, while Japanese girl group ATARASHII GAKKO! and South Korean singer and rapper BIBI got the audience hyped up. Throughout the weekend, it was incredible to witness the range of talent on full display.
What made this event so meaningful, was its representation of the Asian voice and narrative on a prominent stage. For too long, perspectives from the Asian community have been marginalized in mainstream Western media and culture. Head In The Clouds gives a powerful platform to these incredible artists to share their stories and authenticity with New York audiences. Between sets, festival attendees could explore different Asian food vendors. The aromas of various Asian cuisines wafted through the crowds and smelled so delicious!
The success of Head In The Clouds New York only reaffirms the need for more platforms celebrating multifaceted Asian excellence. Let this year’s unforgettable weekend be a catalyst for continued representation and appreciation of the incredible talent within the Asian diaspora and mainstream.
